Life

İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Siverek in 1888/89 (AH 1306) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Siverek in 1905/06, at about 16, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1909/10, places İsmail Hakkı in Diyarbakır as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Homs in 1910/11 and Diyarbakır again in 1911.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to a peak of 400 in 1910/11, as Muhabere Memuru in Homs, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 12,000 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911.
