Life

Hüseyin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1886/87 (AH 1304) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1903/04, Hüseyin began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1909/10 and 1910/11, place Hüseyin in Diyarbakır as Muayene Memuru.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to a peak of 500 in 1910/11, as Muayene Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
