Life#
Born in Kayseri in 1842/43 (AH 1258), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi).
Work began in the Zaptiye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1865/66, at about 23, on a first salary of 350 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ahmet Hamdi as 4. Sinif Teftis Memuru in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1868/69. Next came a post with no place named from 1870 to 1877. From 1877 to 1891 the annual entries place Ahmet Hamdi again in Istanbul, first as 3. Sinif Teftis Memuru, from 1878/79 as a police commissioner, third class (3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) and from 1882/83 as a police commissioner, second class (2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri). The lists give Ihrac for 1869/70 instead of a title.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 650 in 1882/83, the peak, as 2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri in Istanbul, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1890/91. The honours of Ahmet Hamdi were a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi and Osmani orders.
