Life#
Mehteri Ömer İzzet Efendi was born in Kayseri in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehteri Ömer İzzet also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 52, in 1898/99, Mehteri Ömer İzzet began work in Karahisar, paid from the start, on 482 kuruş a month. Only 4 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 52 or older. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, names Mehteri Ömer İzzet as Nahiye Muduru, with no place. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1900 to 1904.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 482 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Nahiye Muduru, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
