Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Mehmet Celalettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Mehmet Celalettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1884/85, Mehmet Celalettin began work, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mehmet Celalettin in Izmir (İzmir) as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), where the entries run to 1903/04. The last post was in Sarayköy in 1904/05, with a rise to official (Memur).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 300 in 1904/05, the peak, as Memur in Sarayköy, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 19,440 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
