Life#
Abdurrahman Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1815/16 (AH 1231), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Mujdecibasi". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdurrahman also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic.
At about 14, in 1829/30, Abdurrahman began work in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From 1840/41 to 1889/90 every annual entry places Abdurrahman in Istanbul, the birthplace, with five changes of title, from Emtia Gumrugu Tahrirat to Tahrirat Kalemi Muduru in 1880/81. Entries spanning 52 years are rare, reached by only 4 of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 2,500 kuruş a month in 1840/41 to 4,000 in 1871/72, the peak, as PT Nezareti Mektupculugu in Istanbul, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. Abdurrahman was the best paid official of the lists from 1840 to 1849; 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary ever were. On average the pay stood in the top 1.2 per cent of each year's paid officials; only 10 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The final annual entry is for 1889/90. Abdurrahman received a rank (rütbe).
