Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1809/10 (AH 1224), Nazif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "seyis". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Nazif also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
At about 14, in 1822/23, Nazif began work in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1855/56, with Nazif as Maliye Kitabeti Başmümeyyiz in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1857/58, with a rise to PT Naziri in 1856/57. The last post was in Aydın in 1858/59, with a rise to Mutasarrif.
Pay rose from 5,000 kuruş a month in 1855/56 to a peak of 12,500 in 1858/59, as Mutasarrif in Aydın. From 1856 to 1859 no official in the lists was paid more; only 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary were ever the best paid of a year. Over four years the salaries add up to 498,000 kuruş, 23.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1858/59. Nazif received a rank (rütbe).
