Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1817/18 (AH 1233) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Emin Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehmet Emin also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French and Italian.
Mehmet Emin began work in the Babi Ali Tercume Odasi in Istanbul in 1844/45, at about 26, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1853/54, names neither a title nor a place for Mehmet Emin. From 1854 to 1864 the annual entries place Mehmet Emin in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 5,000 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to a peak of 8,600 in 1859/60, as PT Umumu Telgraf Muduru in Istanbul, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. Mehmet Emin was the best paid official of the lists in 1854/55 and from 1862 to 1864; 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary ever were. In all, ten years of salary come to 816,000 kuruş, 14.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by 6 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1863/64. Mehmet Emin received a rank (rütbe).
