Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1816/17 (AH 1232), Hafız Osman Resmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 15, in 1831/32, Osman Resmi began work in the Basmusabe Kalemi in Istanbul, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 550 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1860/61, with Osman Resmi as Maliye Teftis Kuyud-i in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1877/78. The last entry, for 1878/79, names neither a title nor a place.
Pay rose from 2,000 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 2,850 in 1863/64, as PT Telgraf Muhasebeciligi in Istanbul, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 15 years pay ended where it began, at 2,000 kuruş. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 7.6 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1878/79. Osman Resmi received a rank (rütbe).
