Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Mahmud Kamil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 21, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1899/1900, every annual entry places Mahmud Kamil in the same post, official (Memur), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 400 in 1899/1900, as Memur in Istanbul, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 33,600 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
