Life#
Hüseyin Tahsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Tahsin began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 28, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Hüseyin Tahsin as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1891/92. Hüseyin Tahsin then moved to Ankara from 1892 to 1901, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Alexandroupoli in 1901/02 and Istanbul again from 1902 to 1904.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 750 in 1895/96, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Ankara, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 675 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
