Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1864/65 (AH 1281), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. İbrahim Ethem had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1879/80, İbrahim Ethem began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Izmir, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 145 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1895/96. İbrahim Ethem then moved back to Izmir from 1898 to 1903. The last post was in Seferihisar in 1903/04, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 145 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 600 in 1903/04, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Seferihisar, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
