Life#
Born in Urla in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Şevket Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Şevket had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Urla in 1883/84, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Şevket as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir (İzmir). Next came Aydın from 1886 to 1888, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1886/87. From 1888 to 1900 the annual entries place Şevket again in Izmir, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 450 in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Izmir, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
