Life#
Born in Urla in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Veli Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Urla in 1893/94, at about 13, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 220 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1905/06 places Veli Şükrü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Izmir (İzmir).
