Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Ziya Efendi was the child of an army major (binbaşı). Ahmet Ziya had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 24, in 1895/96, Ahmet Ziya began work in Beirut (Beyrut), paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Ahmet Ziya as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) in Beirut, where the entries run to 1898/99. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1899 to 1906, with a rise to official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 475 in 1904/05, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Izmir, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 45,900 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
