Life#
Kostantin Eminyan Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Italyan Mektebi. In all Kostantin Eminyan knew four languages, French, Italian and Turkish in writing and Arabic a little; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many. Few officials studied at Italyan Mektebi; only 3 of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
At about 14, in 1874/75, Kostantin Eminyan began work in Tripoli (Trablusgarp), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. From 1883/84 to 1902/03 every annual entry places Kostantin Eminyan in Tripoli, first as an official (Memur), from 1886/87 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 650 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Tripoli, when three in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
