Life#
İbrahim Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1862/63 (AH 1279), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in the Mektubi Kalemi in Baghdad in 1881/82, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places İbrahim in Baghdad, the birthplace, in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), where the entries run to 1892/93, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1884/85 and to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1889/90. Next came Nasiriyah (Nasıriye) and Hammar from 1893 to 1899, then Badra (Bedre) from 1899 to 1906. In 1907/08 the lists place İbrahim in Mahmure.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 500 in 1889/90, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Baghdad, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 115,620 kuruş, 82 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
