Life#
Born in Sivas in 1862/63 (AH 1279), İbrahim Edhem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tokat in 1878, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places İbrahim Edhem in Alacahan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). İbrahim Edhem then moved to Diyarbakır and Pınarbaşı (Aziziye) from 1884 to 1889, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1884/85, then Tokat from 1889 to 1897. Next came Mersin in 1897/98, then Niksar from 1898 to 1905. The last post was in Amasya in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 500 in 1884/85, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Diyarbakır, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. In all, 23 years of salary come to 116,400 kuruş, 85 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
