Life#
Artin Mahir Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Artin Mahir also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1880/81, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Artin Mahir in Aleppo (Halep) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Artin Mahir to İskenderun in 1884/85, then back to Aleppo from 1885 to 1888. Artin Mahir then moved to Antakya in 1888/89. The last posts were in Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1889 to 1894.
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1888/89, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Antakya, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
