Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Mıgırdıç Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi). Mıgırdıç knew five languages, Armenian, French and Turkish in writing and Bulgarian and Greek (Rum) in speech, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 16, in 1878, Mıgırdıç began work in Kuşadası, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mıgırdıç as Kablo ve Alat Memuru in Suakin (Sevakin), where the entries run to 1884/85. Mıgırdıç then moved to four places in nine years. The last posts were in Vamos from 1896 to 1903. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,500 kuruş a month in 1882/83, as Kablo ve Alat Memuru in Suakin, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. After 17 years the salary stood below the first, 500 kuruş against 1,500. In all, 17 years of salary come to 192,000 kuruş, 1.9 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
