Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Ziyauttin Efendi was the child of a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Mehmet Ziyauttin had four years of schooling, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1878/79, Mehmet Ziyauttin began work in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1881/82 to 1894/95 places Mehmet Ziyauttin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), from 1889/90 as Tahrirat Baskitabeti.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 1,000 in 1893/94, as Tahrirat Baskitabeti in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
