Life#
Hafız Hacı Aluş Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1833/34 (AH 1249) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 29, in 1862/63, Aluş began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Thessaloniki, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1862/63, with Aluş as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1871/72. Aluş then moved to Prilep (Pirlepe) from 1877 to 1878, with a rise to a post in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti) in 1873/74, then Skopje (Üsküp) from 1879 to 1884. The last posts were in Tamras from 1888 to 1892. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1892/93 instead of a title.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 500 in 1873/74, the peak, in the Sandık Emaneti, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 150,000 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death).
