Life#
İbrahim Edhem Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Trabzon in 1878, at about 19, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with İbrahim Edhem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Pozantı. İbrahim Edhem then moved to 11 places in 22 years, from Ioannina (Yanya) to Keceli, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1894/95. The lists have no entry for 1897 to 1903. The last post was in Davohitce in 1907/08. Few officials served in as many provinces; 11 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Al Hudaydah, lay about 2,950 km from Trabzon, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 800 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Yabannasif, when four in five paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
