Life#
Born in Shumen (Şumnu) in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Raif Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mustafa Raif had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Shumen in 1869/70, at about 19, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mustafa Raif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shumen, the birthplace. Mustafa Raif then moved to Pleven in 1876/77 and Veliko Tarnovo in 1877/78, then Edirne from 1879 to 1901, with a rise to a post in the Emanet Kitabeti in 1884/85. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1879. The last posts were in Thessaloniki in 1901/02 and Chrysoupoli in 1902/03 and Edirne again in 1903/04.
