Life#
Mehmet Agah Efendi was born in Shumen (Şumnu) in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Shumen in 1871/72, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mehmet Agah as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Vidin. For 1877 to 1878 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Agah to Hadımköy, Strumica (Ustrumca), Pristina (Priştine) and Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa), four places in six years, then Kırklareli from 1884 to 1889. Next came Mount Athos (Aynaroz), Sandıklı, Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık) and Biga, four places in seven years. The last post was in Bozdoğan in 1896/97. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 750 in 1889/90, as Muhabere Memuru in Mount Athos, when three in four paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
