Life#
Pierre Hason Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). In all Pierre Hason knew four languages, Armenian, French and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Istanbul in 1860/61, at about 14, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1861/62, with Pierre Hason as an official (Memur) in Beyoğlu. Next came Izmir (İzmir) from 1872 to 1876, then a return to Beyoğlu from 1876 to 1878. Pierre Hason then moved to Galata in 1878/79, then back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1879 to 1890. The annual lists then follow Pierre Hason to Galata in 1890/91. From 1891 to 1904 every annual entry places Pierre Hason again in Istanbul, first as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini), from 1901/02 as Kontrol Kalemi Mumeyyizligi. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1861/62 to a peak of 2,000 in 1877/78, as Müdür in Beyoğlu, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
