Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1848/49 (AH 1265), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). At about 19, in 1868/69, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Burdur. Next came four places in five years, then a return to Isparta from 1876 to 1881. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Tevfik to Acibadem in 1881/82, and Mersin in 1886/87, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), then Kozan from 1887 to 1898. Mehmet Tevfik then moved to Adana in 1898/99, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Kozan again from 1899 to 1907. Nine places in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 38 years or more.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 800 in 1898/99, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Adana, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 700 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
