Life#
Mustafa Şevket Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa Şevket began work in Kozani (Kozana) in 1891/92, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mustafa Şevket in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Şevket to Kozan from 1896 to 1901, then Latakia (Lazkiye), Mersin and Feke from 1901 to 1904, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1903/04. The last post was in Saimbeyli (Haçin) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as 3. Müdür in Feke, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
