Life#
Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1888/89, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Ürgüp, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 290 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Mehmet Şükrü in Elbasan (İlbasan) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. Mehmet Şükrü then moved to Komotini (Gümülcine), Konya and Karaman from 1898 to 1903. The last post was in Niğde in 1903/04.
The salary went from 290 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 450 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Niğde, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less.
