Life#
Mehmet Yunus Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Yunus also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1866/67, Mehmet Yunus began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Mehmet Yunus in Tosya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Yunus to seven places in 12 years, from Çankırı to Manisa, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1876/77, then Nazilli from 1883 to 1888. Next came Çanakkale and Mithymna (Molova) from 1888 to 1891. From 1891 to 1903 the annual entries place Mehmet Yunus in Elbasan (İlbasan). Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 800 in 1878, the peak, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in Gümüşhane, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
