Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Mehmet Halid Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Halid had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 15, in 1871/72, Mehmet Halid began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mehmet Halid in Yeniköy as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Fener in 1876/77, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Beyoğlu from 1877 to 1900. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1900 to 1907.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 690 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 35 years of salary come to 210,444 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
