Life#
Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Ali Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Ali also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
At about 14, in 1866/67, Mehmet Ali began work in Ioannina, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Mehmet Ali in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Ali then moved to Almyros (Ermiye) from 1870 to 1872, then Karditsa (Kardiçe) from 1872 to 1878, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Ali back to Ioannina, the birthplace, from 1878 to 1880, then Delvine in 1880/81. From 1881 to 1898 every annual entry places Mehmet Ali in Gjirokastër (Ergiri).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 700 in 1872/73, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Karditsa, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 30 years of salary come to 214,200 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1897/98, the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
