Life#
Saffet Adem Efendi was born in Kirim in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Saffet Adem also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Saffet Adem began work in Istanbul in 1896/97, at about 24, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1896/97 to 1905/06 places Saffet Adem in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beyoğlu.
