Life#
Nikolaki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Nikolaki also wrote French and Greek (Rum).
At about 22, in 1895/96, Nikolaki began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1896/97 and 1897/98, place Nikolaki in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 75 in 1897/98, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
