Life#
Halil Ruhi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halil Ruhi also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Halil Ruhi began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Halil Ruhi as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Haydarpaşa from 1895 to 1897, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1895/96. The last posts were in Beyoğlu again from 1897 to 1905.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 550 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
