Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmet Rüştü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Rüştü also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Mehmet Rüştü began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mehmet Rüştü in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Chania (Hanya), Geyve and Bilecik from 1895 to 1900. The last post was in Bandırma in 1900/01.
