Life#
Born in Varna in 1870/71 (AH 1287), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. The official had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 22, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places the official in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow the official to Jeddah (Cidde) and Sirkeci from 1894 to 1898. The last posts were in Beyoğlu again from 1898 to 1906. Jeddah, about 2,600 km from Varna, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 1,000 in 1894/95, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Jeddah, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
