Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also attended the telegraph school.
At about 16, in 1874/75, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1878/79. Next came Beyoğlu from 1879 to 1904. The last post was in Istanbul again in 1904/05. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, fewer than 7 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 600 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when two in three paid officials earned less.
