Life#
Mustafa Mümtaz Efendi was born in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1852/53 (AH 1269), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1870/71, Mustafa Mümtaz began work in Kahramanmaraş, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mustafa Mümtaz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kahramanmaraş, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80. Mustafa Mümtaz then moved to Aleppo (Halep) from 1880 to 1887, then Birecik from 1887 to 1893. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Mümtaz to Gaziantep (Antep) from 1893 to 1904. The last posts were in Aleppo again from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 600 in 1892/93, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Birecik, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less.
