Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community, Antuvan Latini Efendi was the child of a doctor (doktor). Work began in Baghdad in 1876/77, at about 17, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Antuvan Latini as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Baghdad, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1885/86. Antuvan Latini then moved to Mosul in 1886/87, then back to Baghdad from 1887 to 1890. The annual lists then follow Antuvan Latini to Khanaqin (Hanikin) from 1890 to 1892, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1890/91, then back to Baghdad from 1892 to 1896, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru). The last post was in Sjenica (Seniçe) in 1896/97. Sjenica, about 2,400 km from Baghdad, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 1,000 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Baghdad, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 720 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
