Life#
Yusuf Cemil Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1885/86, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Yusuf Cemil in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in Van, where the entries run to 1889/90, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1889/90. Yusuf Cemil then moved to Siirt from 1890 to 1892, then Erciş from 1892 to 1897. Next came Omeraga and Ereğli from 1897 to 1900, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1898/99. The last posts were in Yarpuz from 1901 to 1905.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 540 in 1898/99, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Ereğli, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
