Life#
Petro Hristo Efendi was born in Kozona in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). Petro Hristo knew four languages, French and Greek (Rum) in writing and Bulgarian and Turkish in speech, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Bitola (Manastır) in 1880/81, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Petro Hristo in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1901/02, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1886/87. The annual lists then follow Petro Hristo to Izmir (İzmir), Thessaloniki and Skopje (Üsküp) from 1902 to 1905. The last post was in Thessaloniki again in 1905/06.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 580 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Izmir, when two in three paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
