Life#
Zaharyan Zaharyari Efendi was born in İzmit in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Zaharyan Zaharyari also wrote French and Greek (Rum).
Zaharyan Zaharyari began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1885/86, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Zaharyan Zaharyari in Edirne as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1891/92. Zaharyan Zaharyari then moved to Beyoğlu from 1892 to 1899, then Büyükdere from 1899 to 1902. The last posts were in Tarabya from 1902 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 600 in 1902/03, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Tarabya, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
