Life#
Born in İzmit in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Hasan Zihni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Zihni began work in İzmit in 1876/77, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Hasan Zihni as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitlis. Hasan Zihni then moved to Van from 1880 to 1887. The last posts were in Erzurum from 1887 to 1889.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 475 in 1887/88, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzurum, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1888/89.
