Life#
Ahmet Midhat Bey was born in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Beylerbeyi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Karbala (Kerbela) in 1879/80, at about 19, paid from the start, on 385 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Ahmet Midhat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Karbala, where the entries run to 1882/83. Next came Nasiriyah in 1883/84, then Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1884 to 1894. Ahmet Midhat then moved to Najaf (Necef) from 1894 to 1903, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last post was in Rawanduz (Revanduz) in 1903/04. Rawanduz, about 2,450 km from Al Hudaydah, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 385 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 700 in 1894/95, as 2. Müdür in Najaf, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 153,900 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
