Hasan Hüsnü Efendi was born in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) in 1882/83 (AH 1300), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 17, in 1900/01, Hasan Hüsnü began work in Al Hudaydah, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 700 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1906/07, to 1908/09, every annual entry places Hasan Hüsnü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Taiz.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 700 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Taiz, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 25,200 kuruş, 1.9 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
