Life

Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

İbrahim began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From 1890/91 to 1891/92 every annual entry places İbrahim in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official (Memur), from 1891/92 as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 150 kuruş a month in 1890/91, as Memur in Istanbul, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1891/92.
