Life

Vehbi Efendi was born in Keban in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a land registry official (tapu memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Vehbi also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Tirebolu in 1904/05, at about 16, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1909/10, places Vehbi in Kozani (Kozana) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1911. In 1911/12 the lists place Vehbi in Bitola (Manastır).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1909/10, as Muhabere Memuru in Kozani, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 19,200 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1911/12.
