Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294), Sezar Tarika Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Sezar Tarika had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1892/93, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1895/96, to 1898/99, every annual entry places Sezar Tarika in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Izmir.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Izmir, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 14,400 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
