Ali Haydar Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Manisa in 1873/74 (AH 1290). On record 1901 to 1907, 6 annual entries.

Life

Ali Haydar Efendi was born in Manisa in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 20, in 1893/94, Ali Haydar began work in Manisa, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1906/07 places Ali Haydar in Manisa, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1906/07 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Manisa, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Ali Haydar probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Manisa doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by NİZAM BERKAN MERCAN (2025) (the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree).
